In a recent online exchange (and I'll post more about that later) it became clear to me how disconnected some folks can be from the legislative process. The Florida Legislature recently closed, passing a budget of some 66+ billion dollars (House Bill 5001). This follows last years budget of some 71 billion dollars. That's a huge downward swing in available appropriations and it has caused quite a stir in state budgets, including universities. But, appropriations still come and this must act as something of a fooling assurance to some academics. The message clearly has not been received by many of them. Why? All I can figure out is this: here are some of the primary educational appropriations this year:

If you don't pay attention, and all you see are the numbers, I guess that may explain it. Dollars are flowing, no doubt about that. But you would expect academics to be far more capable of reasoning beyond a base level.
